Free trick-or-treating social story with pictures, in English and Spanish

My Story About Trick-or-Treating is a first-person social story: one sentence and one picture on each panel, to print or to read on a phone or tablet. It tells what happens (a costume, walking with a grown-up, knocking, saying trick or treat and thank you) and that it's okay to feel nervous, with one gentle step to try: tell a grown-up, skip a house or go home. A teacher page names each sentence's type. English and Spanish.

My Story About Trick-or-Treating: picture panels of a child in a cat costume walking with a grown-up, knocking at a door and saying thank you, each with one sentence.

Make your own in seconds

Ask for a social story about another situation (a haircut, the doctor, a birthday party, Thanksgiving dinner, visitors at home), and SCAFLI makes it with a teacher page.

Try asking for:

  • “a social story about Thanksgiving dinner”
  • “a social story about going to a birthday party”

What it is

A social story written to Carol Gray's format: first person, positive, mostly describing what happens, with one gentle coaching sentence. For young children, autistic children and anyone who finds a first Halloween noisy or new.

How to use it

  1. Read it a few days before Halloween, then again that afternoon.
  2. Read it as written, and let the child point to each picture.
  3. Practice the steps at a door at home.

Three quick tips

  • Agree on how your child will say I'm done before you go.
  • Waving and holding out the bag counts as trick-or-treating.
  • Read it again afterward and talk about what happened.
