Free 12-word core vocabulary board for AAC

A core board holds the small, powerful words that work all day: I, want, more, stop, help, go, you, like, not, all done, look and turn. Point to the words while you talk, so the student sees the board used before they are asked to use it. Scan the code to use the same board on a screen.

Core words: a 3 by 4 board of picture squares (I, want, more, stop, help, go, you, like, not, all done, look, turn), color-coded by word type, with a color key and a code to scan.

What it is

A printed core vocabulary board for early communicators. Each word has a picture and a color for its word type, and every word keeps the same spot, so a student can learn where it is.

How to use it

  1. Model: point to the words yourself as you talk, all through the day.
  2. Pause and wait, so the student has time to point.
  3. Accept any try, and say the word back.

Three quick tips

  • Keep the board where the student is, not in a drawer.
  • Use one or two words at a time when you model.
  • Bigger boards keep these same words in the same spots.

Questions

Why these words?
They are small words that work in almost any activity: asking, refusing, commenting and directing.
Can it talk?
Yes. Scan the code to open the same board on a phone or tablet, where each word speaks when tapped.
Can I make a bigger board?
Yes. Ask for 20 words or more, and these words keep their places.

A starting point for your own professional judgment. Use initials only on any page about a student.
