What it is
A token board makes progress visible. The student earns a token for the behavior you are building, and a full row earns the reward.
How to use it
- Show the reward first, so the student knows what they are working for.
- Give a token right after the behavior, and say what it was for.
- Give the reward as soon as the board is full.
Three quick tips
- Start with fewer tokens, so the reward comes quickly.
- Say what the token was for: “You asked for help. That’s a token.”
- Let the student pick the reward when you can.
Questions
- How many tokens should I start with?
- Fewer is easier at the start. Add more once the student is earning the reward often.
- Can it be digital?
- Yes. A SCAFLI token board can also play on a screen.
- Can the student choose the reward?
- Yes. The free PDF includes reward cards to cut out, and a blank one for your own idea.
