Winter Talk Board: core words (I want, more, help, stop, all done, yes, no), winter words (snow, snowman, sled, hat, mittens, coat, boots, hot chocolate) and Things to say (Let's go outside!, Too cold!, I want to go inside).

A winter communication board with the core words in their usual places, twelve snow day words (go, play, make, snow, snowman, sled, hat, mittens, coat, boots, hot chocolate, cold), and a row of whole phrases a tap says at once: Let's go outside!, Let's build a snowman!, Help me with my zipper, and ways to stop or come in: Too cold!, My hands are cold, I need a break, I want to go inside.

What it is

A printable AAC board for snow days, recess in the snow and winter play, for children who use pictures to communicate and for modeling language while you play outside.

Why it works

Studies find that modeling words on a board while you talk helps children understand and use more language.

See the research →

How to use it

  1. Look at the board together while you get dressed to go out, and point to each piece of clothing as it goes on.
  2. Outside, point to the words as you talk: make a snowman, go on the sled, snow is cold.
  3. Agree on a way to come in before you go (too cold, I need a break, I want to go inside), and honor it.

Three quick tips

  • Model two-word phrases like more snow or go sled.
  • Keep the board in a clear bag so it stays dry in the snow.
  • Say the word every time you point to it.

Questions

Does it match a regular core board?
Yes. The top two rows are the same on every SCAFLI place and event board, so help, stop and all done are always in the same spot.
Can I use it on a screen?
Yes. It plays on a phone or tablet, and every button speaks. A phrase is said all at once.
What else is in the PDF?
How to use the board before and during a snow day, with a tally for the adult.
