Free Narrative Retell Probe for 7th Grade

This probe is for speech-language pathologists and teachers who want a quick look at how a 7th grader tells and writes a story. The student tells a story back, puts six story cards in order, then plans, writes, checks and revises one of their own. Use it for a baseline, and again later to see what changed.

Narrative probe, Form A: Tell the Story. Part A has five help questions (who, where and when, what went wrong, what did they do, how did it end). Part B has six story cards to number in order.

What it is

A short narrative probe: a story to hear and tell back, six story cards to put in order, and a four-step write and revise. This PDF is the two student pages. The six cards tell the whole story (Eli and the science fair), so you can read them aloud in order as the story for Part A.

How to use it

  1. Read the story out loud (the six cards, in order, are the story), and have the student tell it back using the five help questions.
  2. Have the student number the six story cards in order, then retell with the order they chose.
  3. On the second page, the student plans, writes, checks and revises a story of their own.

Three quick tips

  • Write down what the student says before you help.
  • Use the same form again later to see change over time.
  • Keep any notes to initials only.

Questions

Is this a standardized test?
No. It is an informal probe, a starting point for your own professional judgment.
Can I use it more than once?
Yes. Ask SCAFLI for Form B, C or D to get the same kit with a different story.
Can I get an oral-only version?
Yes. Ask for the oral-only version and the writing part is left out.

A starting point for your own professional judgment. Use initials only on any page about a student.
